Matthew Wolff in the Coronavirus Skins Game?

Not sure if you’ve heard but there’s the thing called the Coronavirus right now that has shut down the world. I got to say, not having American sports sucks. We are itching to get some sort of sports back into our lives, that’s why the ratings for the NFL Draft a couple of weeks ago were up 37% compared to last year.

So it was announced this week that there is going to be a skins game played at Seminole Golf Club between Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson vs Rickie Fowler and…… Matthew Wolff????

First, I’m over the moon that there is going to be golf played. Scottie Scheffler won the  Maridoe Samaritan Fund Invitational last week which is great, but it wasn’t televised or streamed.  These are the best players in the world and we enjoy watching these golfers do the things we can never do, like hit 350 yard bombs. This event will be on Golf Channel and NBC and I. can’t. wait.

Second, and here’s my biggest question, how does Matthew Wolff slide into this match? I want to preface, I believe that Matthew Wolff will be the best player to come out of Oklahoma State. I said it back when he was in college and I stand by that. He is 21 years old, already a winner on the PGA Tour and he will only continue to get better. But RIGHT NOW how did he get the 4th spot in this skins game.

Rory McIlroy is currently #1 in the world. Dustin Johnson is #5 and Rickie Fowler #27. To be honest I wasn’t expecting Rickie to be that low but he is still a big name and people will tune in to watch him play. Matthew Wolff is wait for it… #110. There was an article on golf channel titled Rickie Fowler, Matthew Wolff embracing ‘underdog’ role in charity match.  YA THINK???? I think an 85 year old man with a walker has a better chance of beating Usain Bolt in the 100M race.

All kidding aside I love Matthew Wolff. I love his little hitch at the beginning of his swing and I think his approach is unique and different enough to make him a star on the PGA Tour one day. Just not this day. I really hope I’m wrong but I think Wolff is biting off more than he can chew here. Maybe he thinks he’s ready and evidently the other players think that he can hang. For the record I think he will hang with them but there are 106 other players ranked ahead of Wolff that could have played. Especially since they are playing in the state of Florida! Go to the local butcher shop next to Publix and you’ll find a PGA Tour player ranked ahead of Wolff.

I’m really trying not to dunk on Matthew Wolff but I don’t think he has any business playing in an event like this. At least Fowler and him have the Oklahoma State connection. Can’t blame the guy for agreeing to play though. I bet there were a number of players who were chomping at the bit to get that 4th spot.

This isn’t the biggest stage but the lights are going to shine bright on the young Wolff. Nothing would delight me more if I’m wrong on this. I hope Wolff goes out there and dominates and plays the round of his life. Best of luck Wolfie.

ALL: (CHANTING) Wolfie! Wolfie! Wolfie!
